French pair Αline CHAMEREAU and Alexandra JUPITER won the gold medal in the Women’s Beach Volleyball tournament.
After a thrilling final attended by a crowd of 1,500 France I came back from 1-0 down and won the match, 2-1, against Cyprus Champions Mariota ANGELOPOULOU and Manolina KONSTANTINOU.
The Cyprus team came very close to the miracle and the gold medal, but did not manage to get it. In the first set, despite being 10-7 down, the Cypriots turned the game around thanks to the serves of KONSTANTINOU, led 15-12, and went on to win the set, 21-17.
The second set was a phenomenal battle, with teams going hand in hand. Cyprus was 20-19 ahead and needed just one point to win 2-0. However, at that crucial moment more experienced France managed to escape and to tike the game at 1-1 on three straight points by JUPITER (on a spike, an ace serve and a placed ball).
The match was led to the third set, where France prevailed, 15-9, won the gold medal and enjoyed their triumph, after a final where French champagne proved tastier than Cypriot zivania!
