The Beach Wrestling Tournament, which began this morning, in addition to its special and autonomous interest, has one more important issue of interest: its results will largely determine which country will top the medals tally.
So far, Greece has won 32 medals, while Italy has 31, and consequently the results of the Beach Wrestling Tournament will affect the final standings.
Of the 14 Greek athletes competing today, nine were victorious, and there was an all Greek battle in the women’s event.
Two athletes have managed two out of two wins in the morning program: the Greek Nikos AROUZMANIDIS and the Frenchman Quentin STICKER (FRA), who are competing in the 70kg category.
AROUZMANIDIS initially beat Abdellatif MANSOUR (ITA) 3-2 and then Ruben MARVICE (ITA) 3-1.
STICKER defeated Albanian Orges LILA 3-2 and Portugal's Hugo Miguel DA SILVA PASSOS 1-0 with a point scored in the final seconds.
A surprise result was that of the Algerian title holder Billel HADRI who lost in the 80kg to Italian Carmelo LUMIA by 4-0.
The same goes for Greek Michalis TSIKOVANIS who won the silver medal in Pescara at +90kg and lost 2-1 to Albanian Paris KAREPI.
Agoro Papavasileiou and Georgios KALOUCHIDIS both proved to be in very good form.
PAPAVASILIOU, who won the gold medal in the 70kg in 2015, beat her compatriot Zoe HATSATOUROVA 3-0, while, KALOUCHIDIS (third in Pescara, in the 80kg category) defeated Italy's Matteo MAFFEZZOLI 3-0.
The games continue this afternoon from 16:00 until 19:00 at the Artemis venue.
